<p>Sources of vitamin D<br />
For building your bones strongly, you also need to include vitamin D through naturally occurring food sources. These include eggs and fatty fishes. Vitamin D fortified foods are also available. These include some breakfast bars and some breakfast cereals, soymilk and rice milk, and cow&#8217;s milk.</p>
<p>This sunshine vitamin is readily available to your body once the sun hits on the skin. The conversion ability of the skin diminishes as age advances from age 20. The vitamin D production would be very low among the person who crossed 65 years. Lack of sun, menopause and improper diet leads to vitamin D deficiency.</p>
<p>The importance of vitamin D<br />
Vitamin D is very important to bone health. Calcium is also required to maintain healthy bones but vitamin D acts as the facilitator to absorb the calcium. Harvard University research confirms that women who included more vitamin supplements and vitamin D food sources in their diet had a minimal risk of broken hips. The research further confirmed that mere inclusion of calcium or milk is not enough to maintain your bone health. A vitamin D deficiency leads to osteoporosis in more adult women than men. The only symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are fractures. Although most fractures result in a broken hip and nothing as serious as death, the benefits of vitamin D supplements should be explored.</p>
<p>Vitamin D requirement<br />
The adequate intake of vitamin D for building healthy bones has been established. A person who is below 50 years old requires 200 IU/day and those who are above 50 years require 400 IU/day.</p>
<p>It is highly advisable to adhere to your physician&#8217;s advice about your vitamin D requirement. If you&#8217;re a home bound individual with more than 65 years old means you need to include more vitamin D in the diet as you may be very prone to bone fractures or breaks. As an unfortunate consequence of age, your vitamin D requirement increases and your body diminishes its natural vitamin D production.</p>

<p>There are three goals that almost everybody has in common, they are to live longer, live free of illness and to manage our weight. Amazingly, walking lets us achieve all three. <p>If you are out of shape or over weight walking is the low stress, no sweat answer to life long conditioning. All you really need is a good pair of shoes a little motivation and a few tips from a fitness professional.</p>
<p>Walking has always been one of the best exercises for your bones, controlling your weight, toning the muscles in your lower body, maintaining good posture and improving your self image.</p>

<p>To lose weight, it&#8217;s ideal to alternate your walking sessions between high intensity and lower intensity days. For example, on one day walk for 30- 45 minutes as a steady and moderate pace. On the next day, walk at a faster pace. You could even do &#8220;&#8221;road work&#8221;" like the boxers do, where you break up your walk along the route with some sets of squats, lunges, bench push ups or other body weight or calisthenic exercises to make it a real cardiovascular and muscle blaster of a workout! It doesn&#8217;t have to be boring or the same thing every day. Make it fun and keep it up consistently, leading an active life-style 365 days a year.</p>
<p>Try to keep a good posture when you walk because this will help prolong your energy levels so you can burn more fat. Carbohydrates are high-octane fuel. They provide energy for movement and help raise internal body metabolism. They&#8217;re also satisfying. The key is to avoid adding high-fat and high calorie toppings to your carbohydrates. Also be sure to focus on fruits and vegetables and do not eat the majority of your carbohydrates from the starch category such as bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes. These type of carbs can create an insulin spike, which in turn feeds your fat storing system.<br />
Fruits and vegetables are the ideal health, diet and fat loss foods for many reasons. They&#8217;re relatively low in fat and calories, high in fiber and rich in essential vitamins and minerals. The National Research Council recommends eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day.</p>
<p>Remember even a three minute walk after meals can make a difference or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. If you are just starting out pick a goal that is easy reach. Remember it&#8217;s not how far you walk but how long. the point is to get your heart beat up. After you get better and better try adding ankle weights and wrist weights.</p>
